The Metropolis of the sea

HVAR Metropola mora is committed to preserving the rich maritime heritage, with a special focus on the traditional boats of Dalmatia. Through various events and festivities, they demonstrate their dedication to the preservation of maritime heritage. One such event is the ‘Fešta forske pulene’ or the 13th Meeting of Traditional Boats of Dalmatia, held in the city of Hvar.

This three-day event, taking place from 5th to 8th October, is organized under the patronage of the Hvar Metropola Mora association, led by Tonko Buzolić Lojko. The program offers a range of interesting activities that promote and raise awareness about the rich maritime history. Visitors can participate in presentations on mariners’ history, attend lectures, learn about wooden boat construction, educate themselves about knots, and take part in various workshops. Additionally, the event includes showcase regattas of wooden boats with Latin sails and a sailor’s ball called ‘Dobar vitar,’ held in the Forsko port, providing entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings.

One of the main goals of the HVAR Metropola mora website is to preserve the traditional wooden boats that bear witness to a rich maritime history. Many enthusiasts, passionate about the maritime heritage of their ancestors, are dedicated to the restoration and conservation of these beautiful wooden vessels, in order to preserve them for future generations.

In addition to promoting traditional boats, the website also highlights their historical significance. It commemorates the famous date from history, October 7th, 1571, when the great Battle of Lepanto took place. The hvarska galija St. Jerolim participated in this epochal battle. From that period, the Zvir pulena has been preserved, which represents the ship’s bow decoration and is the only known pulena from that era. The preservation of this historical artifact is also an important aspect of the work of the Metropola Mora association.

Through its activities, the Metropola Mora association promotes a love for maritime heritage, educates the public, and contributes to the preservation of historical boats and monuments of Dalmatia’s maritime past. Their dedication and enthusiasm play a key role in preserving and promoting the rich maritime tradition of this region.
